Palm Cove

Palm Cove is known as the jewel in the crown of the Cairns Northern Beaches and as such is a hugely popular holiday destination for both visitors and locals alike not only on weekends and school holidays but all year round.

Palm Cove boasts a range of accommodation to suite couples and families.  All of the hotels, resorts, holiday apartments and accommodation houses have been designed to keep the relaxed beachside village atmosphere, with all height limits have been set at three stories to stay in line with the palm trees.

The most dominating thing that will strike you will be the magnificent ancient Melaleuca Trees that the resorts have been built around. These trees are literally hundreds of years old and provide that welcoming natural environment you do not normally see on a beachside vacation location.  Palm Cove offers a charm and a sense of arrival as you drive down the hill towards the beachfront esplanade with the canopies of the trees leading you to the cobblestoned road that runs along the front of the village.

Palm Cove is home to lot's of day spas, boutique shops and a great array of restaurants & cafes to choose from. Again you have all of those little handy niceties such as a beachfront playground, a mini market, fish & chip shop, bottle shop, pub, post office, chemist and doctors, souvenir store, and a full supermarket and shopping centre only a half hour walk down to Clifton Beach.  Palm Cove is a patrolled beachfront by the Cairns Surf Life Savers and it also has a year round patrolled swimming enclosure

All tour operators pick up guests for tours to the Great Barrier Reef from your Trinity Beach accommodation or if you had your own hire car you could drive to the Cairns Marlin Marina yourself in under ten minutes or so.  Trinity Beach is pretty much a self contained little village and has a great deli and specialty supermarket, bottle shop, bakers, newsagents, doctors, buthchers dentists and the like.

There is a really good choice of restaurants also and Trinity Beach just about has the same popularity as its neighbour Palm Cove as it is such a cute little beachside village with good quality and great value holiday accommodation to suit all budgets.  Trinity Beach is also a very popular wedding destination also as the beachfront and headland backdrops make for the ideal wedding pictures.

Kewarra Beach

Kewarra Beach is a quiet beachside area with a small selection of holiday houses.  There are a few convenicence shops at Kewarra Beach such as a small supermarket, take away stores, bottle shop and chemist with a doctors surgery alongside. There are no restaurants at Kewarra Beach however it's only a short drive to Palm cove or Trinity Beach.

Machans Beach

The first beachfront suburb 5- 10 minutes north from Cairns City and the Cairns Airport is Machans Beach. This quaint little village has a hippie feel to it with the old style bungalow housing that dots the suburb.

Machans Beach has a a very strong social community and residents have their own monthly newsletter called Machinations that is put together voluntarily and delivered to every letterbox in Machans Beach for free to keep all the residents in the loop with the happenings in Machans Beach.

There is also a communal organic vegetable garden that you are allowed to donate time to and reap the sowing of everyones seeds that are also donated. Each year on the new full moon the Machans Beach esplanade comes to life with the full moon festival.

Again everyone donates their time to set up stalls to fund raise for the local Machans Beach SES (emergency services) and the community hall fund. At night you can buy food and drinks and wander around listening to the bands and various merry makers. Its a free evenings entertainment and people come from all over Cairns to enjoy the atmoshphere on the refreshing Machans Beach Beachfront esplanade under the light of the silvery moon.

Other happenings in Machans Beach are the free events and live music put on at the Sports Club again for fund raising purposes for the upkeep of the tennis court and basketball court. They even put on a free Christmas party each year and allchildren recieve a gift and a visit from Santa.

The Machans Beach community hall is used to take out an elderly neighbour for coffee and a dance and socialise with other elderly neighbours that can no longer get around easily by themselves. Guests renting the holiday houses in Machans beach are welcome to join in on all local activities.

Local restaurants and take away stores for guests staying in beachfront houses or beachside holiday homes are all within walking distance.

Machans Beach beachfront holiday houses and homes vary from the just plain cute and cosy cottages for two to the more opulant luxurious holiday house that can accommodate up to 8-10 guests.  Most of the holiday homes in Machans Beach have a swimming pool or a spa or a combination of both. Some are two storey whilst others are single level. Most of the holiday homes in Machans Beach are located on Redden Island which is home to only 23 residential houses.

Holloways Beach

Similar in style and ambience of Machans Beach, Holloways Beach is a lot larger and offers more commercial tourist like facilities for holiday makers.

The beach here is patrolled during the school holiday periods and a swimming enclosure is available on the main beach near the childrens playground on the esplanade.

Holloways Beach restaurants are located right on the beach and on some weekends they offer live bands and entertainment for locals and tourists alike to enjoy whilst the kids play on the beach.

The holiday accommodation options at Holloways Beach ranges from private holiday houses to bed and breakfasts, self contained apartments and holiday resorts with management on site.

Holloways Beach is only a 10 minute drive to Cairns city and only 10 minutes to the Skyrail terminal at Smithfield making it a nice central beach location for a relaxing holiday.

Yorkeys Knob

Strange name for a holiday destination? Yorkeys Knob was named after a local fisherman that used to live on top of the hillside knob back in the 1880s and if you are at all interested you can read the story written by Mary T Williams on Wikipedia.

Yorkeys Knob is another small village style hamlet that offers a boat club with a yacht club and large indoor and outdoor dining room and restaurant, beachfront cafes and milk bars, a golf course with a dining room, bottle shop and beauty facilities.

Yorkeys Knob is a popular residential beach location for locals to reside and also holiday with other guests from the world over.

Whilst there are no name brand beachfront holiday resorts in Yorkeys Knob there are fabulous beachfront holiday apartments and units that have swimming pools and barbeque facilities so you can enjoy the great outdoors.

There are also council maintained babeques on the beachfront esplanade for families to enjoy along with the childrens playground.

When you choose holiday accommodation in Yorkeys Knob you can choose to either rent a car www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au or you can take advantage of the local Sunbus which travels thru Yorkeys Knob around about every hour servicing Cairns and the northern beaches up to Palm Cove

Yorkeys Knob is a 15 minute drive from Cairns city and a 15 minute drive to the beautiful beachside suburb of Palm Cove Queensland Australia.

Ellis Beach

Ellis Beach is just a five minute drive north of Palm Cove and it offers the holiday make some cute little absolute beachfront cabins and camping facilities.

On the mountainside of Ellis Beach there is a take away shop that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and it also has a liquor licence. Right next door is the Ellis Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

This is a patrolled beach and as such has a swimming enclosure to give families peace of mind regarding box jelly fish stings and other potential nasties. There are no shops or other infrastructure apart from changing rooms and bathroom facilities at Ellis Beach.

As you can see each of the Cairns Northern Beaches offer their own little piece of charm or facility for the holiday maker and your choice of holiday destination depends on who you are travelling with and what type of facilities attract you to a destination.
